Easier Cleaning of Cast Iron Skillets

Cast iron scares away many people, but if it is maintained properly, the clean up time actually turns out to be faster as compared to other types of pots and pans.

There are certain rules that need to be kept in mind when cleaning cast-iron skillets. Soap is not to be used when cleaning cast iron. Even though soap does not ruin the skillet, it will remove the seasoning from it. What you need for cleaning a cast-iron skillet is hot water, a bristled brush, and salt. You can also use a potato for better cleaning. It is easier to clean a hot pan than a cold one. This is because when the metal is heated, it expands and there is a quicker release of grease and other items from it. Run hot water in the sink, place the pan under it for some time and scrub away all stick-on bits with the help of a thick-bristled cleaning brush.

Cleaning procedure for a dirty cast iron pan

The first thing to do is to make sure that the pan is hot. Next, pour half tablespoon of water mixed with one tablespoon of salt. Take a paper towel and rub it over the pan’s surface to remove anything stuck to it. Salt is effective for grinding. In case of stubborn stains, sprinkle two tablespoons of salt on the skillet and scrub it with a potato cut in half. It should be rubbed firmly over the surface. Both potato and salt are harmless for the surface of a cast iron pan. Potato is also gentle on your finger tips and protects them from abrasions.

Another way to remove stubborn and sticky mess is to scrape it off with a butter knife. This will leave spots on some areas of the pan but these spots will soon disappear as you start using the pan.
